Tuchel: Mateo Kovacic Out With COVID-19
Chelsea midfielder, Mateo Kovacic, has tested positive for the coronavirus (COVID-19), just one day after returning to training.
On Monday, 6 December, the 27-year-old Croatian player returned to training after sitting on the sidelines for nearly two months with a hamstring injury.
The following day, however, coach Thomas Tuchel revealed at a pre-match press conference that Kovacic had tested positive for COVID-19 that same day.
He explained: “He’s quarantining for a few days. So it’s a huge setback for him personally and for all of us.”
As a result, the midfielder will not partake in the UEFA Champions League (UCL) match against FC Zenit in St Petersburg today, Wednesday 8 December.
The Blues are already without four players – Ben Chilwell, N’Golo Kante, Trevoh Chalobah and Jorginho – as they are out with injuries. If the club equals or betters Juventus’ result against Malmo, then they will be declared as winners of Group H in the UCL.
